While resting near the tomb of an 18th-century adventurer named Herbert Herbert Lawford somehow begins to take on the dead man's appearance - and possibly his personality. As he struggles to understand what has happened to him Lawford becomes caught between skeptical doctors his anxious wife and a mysterious woman who believes his change is real and meaningful. The novel blurs the line between the supernatural and psychological exploring identity memory and the hidden parts of the self.
