Physicians have acknowledged a connection between the mental states of depression and mania since the time of the ancient Greeks. The term "manic-depressive insanity" was first coined by Emil Kraepelin at the beginning of the 20th century. French alienists had hypothesized a "double" or "circular" sickness in the middle of the 19th century that had alternating spells of depression and mania. Kraepelin's extensive clinical background led to some of the most convincing descriptions of mood disorder symptoms—descriptions that may have never been surpassed. A reference point for contemporary classification schemes for mood disorders continues to be the Kraepelinian nosology.
