Edward Bradford Titchener D.Sc., Ph.D., LL.D., Litt.D. (1867-1927) was a British psychologist who studied under Wilhelm Wundt. He is known for creating his version of psychology that described the structure of the mind: structuralism.
The basic psychology book by British author Edward Titchener, first published in 1915, is a resource the author would have found helpful while starting his own study of the topic some 30 years earlier. He began this introspective path after reading a passage in James Mill, the "most unpsychological of psychologists," and Titchener hopes to spare his readers "a great deal of labor and vexation of spirit" by doing so. Although the introduction is overly lengthy, Titchener hopes that the reader will learn to be precise and direct in his criticisms, recognize his own point of view, and adhere to it when later developing his own psychological framework.
In addition to a list of references for additional reading (restricted to works in the English language), each chapter includes a list of questions to assess the reader's comprehension of what he has just read. The word "consciousness," in Titchener's opinion, is shaky and is best avoided.
