The American Senator by Anthony Trollope is a satirical novel that contrasts English country life with American political ideals. The story centers on Elias Gotobed, an American senator visiting England, who critiques British traditions, especially the aristocracy, the legal system, and the Church.
Parallel to the senator's observations is a romantic plot involving Mary Masters, a modest and intelligent young woman torn between marrying for love or status. Her suitors include the wealthy but arrogant Reginald Morton and the vain local squire, Lord Rufford.
Through Gotobed's sharp commentary and the unfolding domestic drama, Trollope explores themes of social hypocrisy, gender roles, and the clash between old-world customs and new-world pragmatism.
