The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes is a psychological thriller first published in 1913. It is loosely inspired by the real-life Jack the Ripper murders.
The story follows Mr. and Mrs. Bunting, a struggling middle-class couple in London who decide to take in a lodger to make ends meet. A mysterious and secretive man named Mr. Sleuth rents a room in their home. Around the same time, a series of gruesome murders targeting women—committed by a killer known as "The Avenger"—begins to terrify the city.
As the murders continue, Mrs. Bunting grows increasingly suspicious that their quiet, odd lodger may be the killer. However, she is torn between her fear and the security his rent brings. The tension builds as she tries to protect her husband and stepdaughter while grappling with her suspicions.
The novel is notable for its psychological depth and moral ambiguity, focusing more on fear and dread than on explicit violence.
