Ambrosio falls from grace when he is seduced by Matilda, a woman disguised as a novice monk. Their illicit relationship triggers a descent into corruption, lust, and eventually murder. As Ambrosio commits increasingly heinous acts—including rape, sorcery, and a pact with the Devil—his soul becomes entangled in evil. The novel explores themes of hypocrisy, repression, temptation, and the supernatural.
