The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens is a sentimental novel that follows the tragic story of Little Nell Trent, a kind and innocent girl, and her grandfather, who owns a rundown curiosity shop in London. Obsessed with ensuring Nell’s future, the grandfather secretly gambles in hopes of winning money for her, but instead falls into debt.
The sinister moneylender Daniel Quilp seizes the shop, forcing Nell and her grandfather to flee and wander the countryside. Along the way, they encounter various characters—some kind, others cruel—while their health and fortune steadily decline. Meanwhile, back in London, friends and relatives search for them.
The novel contrasts good and evil through its vivid characters and ultimately ends in tragedy, as Nell dies from exhaustion and hardship. The story highlights themes of innocence, greed, and the cruelty of industrial society.
