The Sea-Wolf, published in 1904, is another classic by Jack London, but it diverges from The Call of the Wild in its setting and themes. This novel is a psychological and adventure story set primarily at sea and explores themes of brutality, survival, and the clash between civilization and savagery.

The protagonist, Humphrey Van Weyden, is a literary critic who is shipwrecked and ends up aboard the sealing schooner Ghost, captained by the brutal and enigmatic Wolf Larsen. Larsen is a tyrannical figure who embodies the novel’s exploration of Nietzschean philosophy and the nature of power. The book delves into Van Weyden’s struggle to adapt to life aboard the ship under Larsen’s oppressive rule and his own journey of self-discovery and survival.

London uses the harsh maritime environment and the complex character of Wolf Larsen to probe deeper philosophical questions about human nature, leadership, and the limits of human endurance. The novel’s gripping narrative and intense character dynamics make it a compelling read, examining the darker aspects of human nature and the extremes to which people can be pushed.
