The story follows Lilia Herriton, a young English widow who travels to Italy and impulsively marries a much younger Italian man, Gino Carella, scandalizing her conservative in-laws. When she dies in childbirth, the Herriton family tries to reclaim the baby to "save" him from what they see as an uncivilized life. However, their interference leads to tragic consequences.
Through characters like Philip Herriton and Caroline Abbott, Forster critiques British snobbery and narrow-mindedness, contrasting it with the passionate, chaotic vitality of Italy. The novel explores how attempts to control others—especially across cultural lines—can lead to disaster.
